Letter to Editor; sent to The News and DAWN. Lets see if it gets published! There are no two opinions that all attacks such as that on Hamid Mir yesterday are the works of cowards, and must be condemned by all and sundry with full force. While fully understanding the agony through which the families of the targeted individuals go through, we ought to keep our emotions under check, show restrain, and avoid adding fuel to the fire; regrettably a segment of the media as well as some opponents of Hamid Mir, to put it mildly, have gone berserk. Little doubt that apprehensions expressed by Hamid Mir need to be looked at seriously, and an all out effort made to apprehend the culprits, irrespective of the group or organization they belong. Simultaneously sanity must not be lost sight of, and unfortunately this is the first casualty in such an unfortunate incident. In his piece title ‘civil-military’ published in your today’s paper, Dr Farrukh Saleem has rightly pointed out that military needs full backing of the nation. But then we all are aware of the nefarious designs of our detractors to drive a wedge, and isolate the Armed Forces since their weakening means the weakening of Pakistan. It’s a well know fact that the ISI is one of their prime targets. Now with the ISI in the eye of this storm emanating from Hamid Mir’s apprehensions/allegations, the Government must intervene swiftly to conduct a transparent and time-bound investigation through a credible and independent commission, wherein the ISI is made to cooperate fully. It is in any case in the interest of ISI itself too to clear its name once for all by early tracing out the perpetuators of this attack. Once the facts are established by the commission, the culprits whosoever they may be brought to speedy justice and meted out exemplary punishment. And in case allegations against the ISI are determined as unfounded, those leveling that must then be held accountable as provided for in the constitution. It is only in this cogent manner that we can avert the disaster that the discrediting of national institutions, including the Armed Forces, Judiciary, and the Parliament, is looming large on the horizon. Given the emotionally charged ongoing harangue in some sections of the media, I wonder if this letter will be printed in its original form. Well that will be the test of its balanced reporting Prof Manzoor Iqbal Awan Faculty Member & Senior Consultant * USQ (Australia), COMSATS & NUML * Bahria, Air & Preston Universities * University of Lahore * Dual Matrix Inc. & MDi Cell: +92 (300) 850 0732 Emails: profmanzoorawan@yahoo Profile: linkedin/in/manzooriqbawan
