Letter to Jeremy Hunt on the subject of GMOs and the effort of Owen Paterson to foist them of the British public: Dear Jeremy. The other morning I heard Owen Paterson acting as lobbyist for Monsanto and other biotech companies that are desperate to introduce GM crops into the European environment. At the same time, we are aware that GM frankenfoods have been banned from restaurants in the Houses of Parliament. We are used to hypocrisy from politicians, but I have to say that this really is the worst example I have ever come across. Please would you inform Mr. Paterson that nothing he can say will convince the British public that GMOs are safe. It is very clear from the nonsense he spouted on the BBC programme that he is completely ignorant of the research carried out in many parts of the world that clearly indicate disruption of the DNA in creatures fed on GM foods, and even if this were not the case, it would be profoundly unethical to make the British people experimental lab rats for Monsanto. I do not know with any certainty why Mr. Paterson is so keen to persuade us to accept GM foods, but would be tempted to ask how much he is being paid to do so. Although I cannot prove that he is sponsored by Monsanto, I am perfectly certain he is not doing it for the benefit of the British people. I have recently written to every major supermarket chain in the UK asking them to say whether or not they currently market GM foods in their stores and if they have any intention of doing so. So far I have heard from Tesco, Sainsbury, M&S and Morrisons, and all have declared that they do not sell GM products. All are only too aware of public resistance to GM foods and are highly unlikely to risk their profits and their share values on anything so foolish as to attempt to foist them on reluctant customers. I would be obliged to you if you would pass this information on to Mr. Paterson and suggest to him that he will waste his time and credibility by acting on behalf of an organisation that is widely regarded as a threat to our natural eco-systems and to the welfare of human kind. -- Best regards, David Britten
