Letter to Rafaele Raphael Kinn L. Tenthani From Kingsley Kapasula Kabwix Chimombo Dear Raphael, I have read more than my fair share of issues on your Muckracking on Sunday column, and have come to the conclusion that the best thing to do in most cases is to ignore it because it really is like any other information just written in good English. I know you pride yourself as someone who likes stepping on other peoples feet but writing week in week out about the Presidents misadventures has rendered you column useless to say the least. I understand you are a fully trained journalist and issues of numbers and figures do not feature highly in your training. I forgive you that you cant do comparative analysis to prove your assertions. The best you can say is the President has fired a village of officers...hired a village of advisors...a bloated entourage...will be in the Us for 25 days... and so on. I know you cant quite bring out the figures on these as numbers are not your specialty. For a start, the President left Malawi on Sunday 14 September and is scheduled to return on 30 September. How that translates to 25 days in the US, I dont quite understand. Please do the subtractions and update your article. Its quite laughable that you assert the President canceled all benefits of a lean cabinet when he roped in a village of advisors and pseudo advisors. President Joyce Banda had a 32 member cabinet which has been reduced to 20. President APM has hired 7 advisors (Please confirm with OPC and update your article). I hope you can be able to find out how much the 32 member cabinet was spending and what the 20 member cabinet is spending. When you get the difference you can check how much the advisors are spending and check if indeed the benefits of a lean cabinet have been canceled. I am sure that this isnt difficult mathematical jargon for you. In addition, while there were 32 cabinet minister, the former President had advisors as well. Please inform the nation how many they were and if that cost has also been cancelled by the village of advisors appointed by President APM. You assert that the President is working with the very clowns that confused and misled his big brother. These clowns worked with the President when he was out of government; they rebuilt the party when some wise clowns joined JB when his big brother had not been buried; they campaigned together and won the May 2014 elections. So for you the wise decision was to dump these clowns. By the way how many clowns are these. I have heard of Chilima, Tembenu, Chiumia, Msaka, Mwanamvekha...etc who werent in cabinet of his late brother, are these part of the clowns? As a citizen of this country, l am interested to know from you, Sir, how big the entourage in tow of the President is. I also dont like blanket assertions on how this will blow tax payers money...as a tax payer I want you to give figures and how better that tax could have been used apart from being allowances to people travelling with the President. The President is at work just like you and has to be paid. And for being the first citizen, he is entitled to security detail and amenities suitable for his office. He was duly elected into office by tax payers who were fully aware that at one point or the other their tax will fund his travels. You and I cant demand the same. We can demand for accountability. As a seasoned journalist you can find the number that travelled with the President and do a comparison of how bad or good it is. You cant say that we shouldnt compare with JB, Bingu or Maluzi because APM said of business unusual...then how do you know its a bloated entourage... Village of advisors? You must have compared with something. If you didnt compare then you shouldnt complain because maybe thats the business unusual. Funny how you think the President is using the trip as a honeymoon after his wedding. Thats the dullest thing I have read all my life. You surely think the President has no personal money to afford a honeymoon? I start to think this article has been written by a Facebook Activist who is smart and has brains he has never used before. But if it has been written by you then am sorry you can do better than this Ralph and think for yourself not for those you want to make happy. For you business unusual is the President driving by himself; without security detail; without saying goodbye to his VP and cabinet; because you are worried about the allowances given to drivers and security officers?? No you can argue better than that...dont just write articles in the papers because you have to as we will also be tempted to think that you write to get money. Transformative leadership doesnt entail changing structures and processes but rather enhancing and bringing real value. The business unusual is the reduction of the number of trips undertaken by the President and their relevance to the Presidency and the nation. Why do we believe that our President is a supper human being that knows everything that is going on? If we dont trust anyone to be President at a time, why have them at all. You are discrediting his decision to have 20 member cabinet by focusing on advisors...why didnt you warn him not to appoint advisors as you seem quite sure that he could do without them; and thats something you didnt notice as well when Her Excellency President Dr. Joyce Banda had a 32 member cabinet and advisors as well. Is it a case of selective reasoning? I know you have to write something week in week out, but there are a lot of issues that need governments attention which you column can easily give out.Talk issues not blame games that will in no way move this country forward. Dont take for granted your privilege of writing something every week to write articles that do not make sense thinking that we will like them simply because they are attacking the President. May be we need a Post Elections Complaints Commission where all of us whose favorite candidates lost can be complaining to because we are so much bent at seeing a government fail instead of assisting it do well and where we find that they failed, remove them from office during elections. We can for once after elections focus at the real issues affecting our nation and talk politics again a year before elections. We read nothing but politics, you go and watch a play, its about politics, you get on a bus people are talking politics. Is it any wonder we are predominantly a physically starving, ignorant and diseased nation, that believes all our problems stem from politics, and that the solution lies in the President only and talking about politics. We are spoiling our own Malawi with footling stories. Any wonder that our national anthem notes that envy is one of the enemies we have to fight as well?
