Letter to the Editor in todays Maui News: Sanctuary a haven for animals, but help needed The Leilani Animal Sanctuary, a nonprofit organization, is in urgent need of volunteers during this holiday season (and beyond). Leilani is home to goats, chickens, pigs, tortoises, a turtle, ducks, geese, donkeys, cats, rabbits and has recently acquired a second baby axis deer whose mother was killed by a hunter. George, a pig who was blind, has received surgery and is now able to see. Many of these animals have come from situations of neglect verging on torture, and have now found peace at this 8-acre haven. The animals all live harmoniously despite the many distinct personalities. The director has devoted her life to the sanctuary. She oversees the animals medical, physical and emotional well-being with love and expertise. But one woman cannot do it all. My husband and son have used their carpentry skills to help with a 2,000-square-foot aviary, rebuild a leaking goat barn roof and are working on constructing nesting boxes for hens. There are a few other regular volunteers but more are urgently needed. If you care about animals and would like to give of yourself this Christmas season, volunteers are needed to feed animals, clean water bowls, plant shade and food trees for animals, even groom rabbits. Working outdoors in the fresh air is its own reward, especially when coupled with the knowledge that your efforts are helping improve the lives of beautiful innocent creatures. Tours are offered at 4 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m. Saturdays. To volunteer, email [email protected] or see leilanifarmsanctuary.org.
