Letters to the editor Gem and mineral show thanks supporters The Humboldt Gem & Mineral Society’s annual gem and mineral show has become an institution in Humboldt County with attendance spanning several generations of families. The HGMS goal is education in the earth sciences for its members and the public. Red and Nancy Jioras, Humboldt Gem & Mineral Society Letter to Eureka City Manager Greg Sparks I am responding to your column in the city of Eureka enewsletter about the poor condition of many of the city’s streets. I would like to suggest that funding for at least some repairs could be made available by shifting monies that are currently being used for residential street-sweeping. If you have ever observed the street-sweeping operations in residential neighborhoods you will have to agree that they are virtually useless. Most of the trash on the streets ends up at the edges of the street, which are inaccessible to the street sweeper due the to presence of parked cars. This is particularly true in residential neighborhoods, where the street sweeper makes its rounds in the very early morning. Almost every house has one or more cars blocking access to the edge of the street, so the street sweeper does nothing more than stir up dust in the neighborhood. When I lived in Sacramento several years ago, every neighborhood street had signs prohibiting parking on the night that the street sweeper made its rounds. This allowed the sweeper to clean the edges of the streets and also had the effect of eliminating abandoned and inoperative vehicles, which are a common problem in Eureka. Please consider doing away with street-sweeping in residential neighborhoods or requiring streets to be cleared of vehicles on the day the streets are swept. Either option will lead to an improvement of Eureka’s streets. Jennifer Raymond, Eureka
