Let’s analyse the situation of breed dogs in Mauritius from an objective view. 10-20 years ago German shepherd dogs were seen on every leash, people used to love them and this is mainly because of the huge success of the movie REX. I had one too as a kid! And then came the Doberman’s time, having this dog made owner’s felt ‘Powerful’. Griffon became very fashionable after that... Lisien salon! Everyone needed one. Then retrievers... Labradors... Golden... After a few years, the Rottweiler became THE star, on the road, at the beach, in pet shows and at the vet... Every dog lovers had to posses one. Today! The molosses and Mastiffs – The giant dogs are ‘IN’. Cane Corso, Dog de Bordeaux, Rotts still in the line, Amstaffs, Great Dane... ect After their ‘peak’ times, shelters and refuges started to take in German sheps, Dobbies, Griffon, Rotts... All either abandoned, ill-treated, straying, underfed... Pure breed dogs that were once in HUGE demand are now being treated like trash... WHY? Because LA MODE IN SANZER! In a few years’ time, I am 100% sure that I will be rescuing and fostering Dog de Bordeaux, Nap mastiffs, that these breeds will be waiting for their turn to be adopted/euthanize. Can’t believe that? I am sure that 20 years ago, people would have found it difficult to believe that one day German shepherd, Dobermans and Griffons would be abandoned and euthanize as well! We see here that FASHION causes a craze for certain breed and then people just get fed up. Breed dogs have their own behaviour, attitude, characteristics... which made them suitable to particular persons whose energy level, level of commitment, time, and lifestyle suit such and such breed. Not everyone can have any breed dog. You should get the dog you need, not the dog a la mode. The majority of breed owners just want to: Glace ene kut! Otherwise who would crop and dock the ears and tails of their loved ones? Who would walk a Great Dane at 1pm under a scorching sun in a public place with burning pavement? Who would drag a huge mastiff under high temperature a whole day in pet shows surrounded by hundreds of people? If this is not to show off, then what? Of course, there are many who love the breed for their special characteristics. They genuinely know the animal’s needs and requirement and they will stick to that breed only. Some are all-rounders, they can adapt themselves to the breed dog and care for the latter as needed. The rest... Que de la glace! While I cannot expect the majority of money minded breeders to give the proper information to buyers, I would recommend buyers to please go read about a particular breed before buying/adopting. The wrong breed at home can make your life hell... Literally!
