Lev 25:8 And thou shalt number seven sabbaths of years unto thee, seven times seven years; and the space of the seven sabbaths of years shall be unto thee forty and nine years. 9 Then shalt thou cause the trumpet of the jubile to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month, in the day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land. 10 And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family. 11 A jubile shall that fiftieth year be unto you: ye shall not sow, neither reap that which groweth of itself in it, nor gather the grapes in it of thy vine undressed. 12 For it is the jubile; it shall be holy unto you: ye shall eat the increase thereof out of the field. 13 In the year of this jubile ye shall return every man unto his possession. 14 And if thou sell ought unto thy neighbour, or buyest ought of thy neighbour’s hand, ye shall not oppress one another: 15 According to the number of years after the jubile thou shalt buy of thy neighbour, and according unto the number of years of the fruits he shall sell unto thee: 16 According to the multitude of years thou shalt increase the price thereof, and according to the fewness of years thou shalt diminish the price of it: for according to the number of the years of the fruits doth he sell unto thee. 17 Ye shall not therefore oppress one another; but thou shalt fear thy God: for I am the LORD your God. 18 Wherefore ye shall do my statutes, and keep my judgments, and do them; and ye shall dwell in the land in safety. 19 And the land shall yield her fruit, and ye shall eat your fill, and dwell therein in safety. K so i guess starting from the year they get to the promised land & start keeping track of the every 7 year sabbath for crops bit from the last section; they are to keep track of 7 sabbaths of years till they get to the 49th year & on that year they are to hold a special trumpet blowing ceremony during the day of atonement where everyone across all the land is to hear the trumpet (back then it was a rams horn with a hole drilled into it, not the brass instrument that comes to mind nowadays) & that will be a symbol to let everyone know that the next year the 50th will be holy unto God called the jubile where freedom is given be it a collateral for a loan gets returned to the borrower or if someone hires themselves as a slave in exchange for money they are to go free - this year is like a sabbath year in that nothing is to be planted but things that grow naturally can be eaten. God doesnt want people oppressing each other so if someone wants to sell their land the price of farmland many years away from the jubilee will be more than the price of land few years away from the jubile because you are paying for the fruits that you get from the fields on that land & it is more like a lease as the ownership reverts at the time of the jubile to whoever inherited it. God said not oppressing: 3238 יׄונָה, יָנָה [yanah /yaw·naw/] v. A primitive root; TWOT 873; GK 3435 and 3561; 21 occurrences; AV translates as “oppress” 11 times, “vex” four times, “destroy” once, “oppressor” once, “proud” once, “do wrong” once, “oppression” once, and “thrust out”. 1 to oppress, suppress, treat violently, maltreat, vex, do wrong. 1a (Qal) to oppress, suppress. 1b (Hiphil) to treat violently, maltreat. - people is one way of fearing Him whos name is YHVH your Elohim. Then we get this familiar speech - keep & do the statues & judgements; that way you will be safe and you will have enough to eat from your work in the fields and you will live in safety - So seeing as how we noticed last time disobedience to the keeping the every 7 year sabbath for crops bit was part of the reason they were taken into slavery by the Babylonians - we can tell that they did not take this line about if you obey you will be safe seriously. Well as most of us are NT Gentile Christians & not blood descendants of Israel not to many people will be affected by this law of having to return someones land to the inheritor after every 50 years or less depending on when the jubile is. However we as NT Christians are called to forgive people their debts if they cant pay (Mt 18:21-35). We are also called not to get into debt (Rom 13:8). And we are called to be honorable & honest in business so if we do a lease on a property & someone doesnt want to renew it when it is over we must be prepared to leave quite similar to this jubile situation here. I dont know of any nation that still allows slavery although in mine, employees who are getting paid feel like slaves from time to time; but they are still classified as hired servants even if the people hiring them are robbing them by not paying them enough or what they are worth. However if there was any people who claim to be Christians in this day and age who own slaves then it would be a good idea for them to find out when the jubile is so they know when to set them free. Well if anyone is a slave owner even in this day and age the last thing they want to hear is God wants them to set their slaves free as that could cause them to forsake God or at least the preacher saying it. Well the only passage coming to mind atm is this one from Phile 10 I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds: 11 Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me: 12 Whom I have sent again: thou therefore receive him, that is, mine own bowels: 13 Whom I would have retained with me, that in thy stead he might have ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel: 14 But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly. 15 For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever; 16 Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord? 17 If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself. 18 If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account; - Now Paul was asking Philemon if he could accept back a runaway slave named Onesimus Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved - And so because in the NT age any believer in Christ who is truly born again is adopted into the family of Abraham - this bit about letting the slaves go free should at least apply to any NT Christians if not all people period & intentionally not giving someone the bible in order to keep them as a slave is more of a crime than anything as Mt 23:13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. - says shutting the doors to heaven so people cant get into the kingdom brings you woe. Not to mention that this passage here really tells me the heart of God - Gal 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. God did not intend us to be owning each other as slaves but to be brothers & equals all sharing the same father & destiny.
