Leyla Gencer is known as the last diva of 20th Century. The first Turkish soprano singer. She began to study at the Istanbul Conservatory, sang in the chorus of the Turkish State Theather then entered the Ankara State Opera. The first opera song which she sang Cavalleria Rusticana. Also she is the first Turkish opera singer who get on the stage and longest time sang at La Scala (1953). Gencer wrote her name to World Opera Terminology and for her amazing singing technique is still being studied at La Scala; Gencerate… She died on May 10, 2008 in Milan. Following the funeral service in San Babila Church and subsequent cremation in Milan, her ashes were brought to Istanbul and scattered in the waters of the Bosporus during the orchestra playing opera at the shore on May 16, according to her wish.
