Lib Dems back higher taxes for rich Liberal Democrats would demand more taxes on the wealthy as part of the price of coalition if next year’s general election is inconclusive, leader Nick Clegg has indicated. But the Deputy Prime Minister refused to set out further details of his “red lines” in any coalition negotiations, amid reports that he would be willing to concede the in/out referendum on EU membership demanded by Conservatives in return for constitutional reforms. The Lib Dem conference in Glasgow has been marked by warnings of the dangers for the country of single-party rule by either Tories or Labour, who Mr Clegg warned were offering a “dismal choice” between a broken society or a broken economy. The DPM accused Chancellor George Osborne of going against prevailing economic wisdom by trying to eliminate the UK’s national deficit without tax hikes on the rich and instead concentrating on cuts in public spending and welfare for the working poor. Lib Dems in government would insist on around 20% of the £100 billion deficit being paid off through higher taxes on the rich, such as their proposed £1.5 billion “mansion tax” or a £1 billion reduction in tax breaks for wealthy people’s pensions, he said.
