Liberal Statement on the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People TORONTO– Liberal Aboriginal Affairs critic Carolyn Bennett made the following statement today on the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People: “Today we mark the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People by acknowledging the unique indigenous cultures around the world, and honouring the fundamental and ongoing role Aboriginal peoples have played, and continue to play, in building Canada. This year’s theme, "Indigenous peoples building alliances: Honouring treaties, agreements and other constructive arrangements," is particularly poignant here in Canada as we mark the 250th Anniversary of the Royal Proclamation. It was this pact that laid out how the richness of the land would be fairly shared. That has not happened. The Royal Proclamation enshrined a nation-to-nation relationship between the Crown and Aboriginal peoples, and it is important for all Canadians to reflect upon the nature of that original relationship based on partnership, respect and cooperation for mutual benefit. Honouring its spirit is not only the responsibility of elected politicians, but of every Canadian. Indeed, it is the roadmap to how we will achieve success together. Respecting Aboriginal rights, honouring treaties and working in partnership with First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities to build a shared and lasting prosperity is the path forward and will benefit all Canadians.”
