License plate readers arent just for police anymore. As the Democrat and Chronicle is reporting Sunday, the technology has moved into the private sector. Some companies use LPRs for things like parking control, but one group of affiliates, including one in Rochester, gather and store huge volumes of license plate records, later making them available for sale to police, lawyers, insurance companies and other entities with an interest in where weve been.
