Life Beyond the #PhD: An opportunity for PhD students to reflect on their future careers and develop the skills to get them there: 12/08/2013 - 14/08/2013 A celebration of postgraduate research and skills Cumberland Lodge has developed a unique celebration of the postgraduate research culture in the UK. Each year we invite PhD students to hear leading public figures recount the life decisions they made after their PhDs, as well as hearing from experts in higher education policy, communication, career development and impact. PhD students from across the country use this forum to exchange ideas, practices, experiences and aspirations. All participants give a ten-minute presentation on their research pitched to a group of interdisciplinary colleagues. This experience is intended to prepare students for an increasingly interdisciplinary academic life. But it also offers a learning opportunity in communication skills in a non-specialist forum which is vital outside academia. The key to the event is that PhD students are shown that PhDs have demonstrable value both inside and outside academia. The support networks established by these events have proved to be invaluable whatever the future holds. Speakers and facilitators confirmed so far: Professor Janet Beer, Vice-Chancellor, Oxford Brookes University Dr Steve Cross, Head of Public Engagement, University College London Dr Warren Dockter, Archives By-Fellow, Churchill College, University of Cambridge Katie Hewitt, Careers Adviser, Cambridge University Careers Service Professor Howard Hotson, Fellow and Tutor in Modern History, Professor of Early Modern Intellectual History, St Anne’s College, University of Oxford Dr Steve Joy, Careers Adviser, Cambridge University Careers Service Dr Debbie McVitty, NUS, Head of Higher Education (Research and Policy) Dr Valbona Muzaka, Senior Lecturer in International Political Economy, King’s College London Dame Elizabeth Neville, DBM, QPM, former Chief Constable, Wiltshire Police Dr Graham Scholefield, Management Consultant Alison Skilbeck, Actress; Associate Teacher, RADA With a performance from actress Ruth Rosen For more information please visit: cumberlandlodge.ac.uk/programme/Forthcoming%20Events/PhD_2013
