Life in a closing world once called free. Jed Perls focused on art but of course this us far broader than art. Our nuns fret and froth with fevered hate at all beyond the narrow walls of this weeks orthodoxy. Expunge the dissenters, exile the heterodox, fortify the Pale. What is an open mind but one that refuses to take sides, to recognize who may do what to whom, to assent to why it must be done, and to do it with utmost haste and enthusiasm?
