Life in the back yard at the Monarch Nursery We were in working on the extra bedroom, still cleaning it up to get ready to paint. When Debora told me that “the nursery was open again”, meaning the Monarch Nursery or Butterfly bush, I went outside and looked. There was a female flying around depositing her eggs on several different leaves, then I saw another butterfly that had just come out of its cocoon and was drying its wings. I found a cocoon on the underside of one of the leaves on the bush and also on the bush, 3 caterpillars, from very small, little over ½ inch to one almost 3 inches and looking like it is ready to becoming a cocoon. There is still one on the side of the house waiting to develop, it is still a light green, when it becomes dark in color, the butterfly will emerge. With the weather as hot as it is, they are becoming busier and busier and the nursery is open.
