Life is never boring! This morning, I arrived at my first job - TopicsExpress

Life is never boring! This morning, I arrived at my first job by 9 am, at a small gas plant on Cynthia Road. Customer had asked me to bring a complete satellite system, and that he would make sure everything was ready for me when I arrived. Well, everything was ready, sort of. The campshack was on site. Brand new unit, looking all pretty, covered in fresh snow. Unfortunately, no exhaust coming out of the furnace pipes. Generator was standing next to the campshack, cords plugged in...ready to go.... but not running. The temperature inside the campshack was basically the same as outside... -22 C. I could have, and thought about the possibility, of turning around and coming back another day, but I had already travelled here, and hated to waste time and fuel. So, I put on the warm insulated coveralls Lanny gave me. He used to do the inside work, while I did the outside work, so every year, he bought me a new set of warm coveralls so that I would be toasty warm while doing my job outside. With my warm gear on, I started the generator...... it hesitated the first two starts, but I finally got it going. Good, now I have power. I completed all of my outside work first, since it didnt matter if I was inside or outside, temperature wise. Then, I went inside, and it was just marginally warmer, as it takes a lot of heat to warm up from -22 to work without gloves temperature. Job site supervisor arrived, came in to check on things... furnace had quit. Together, we spent about an hour, trouble shooting, trying to get the brand new furnace working again. We got it going, so he left, and I continued with my job. Some of the wiring had been poorly done, so I had to correct those problems before doing my hook up. Job site supervisor returned an hour later... furnace had quit again. Finally tracked it down to the vent being frozen up with ice, as the vent spews out lots of moisture, and the continuous running at low temperature caused a complete closure of the vent pipe. By the time I was finished my job after 1 pm, with everything working as it should on three TVs, and an extremely happy customer, the temperature had finally reached the 5 C mark, so it still had a ways to go to get to +22 C. I took my warm coveralls off, jumped back in the truck, and headed for Edson. Lanny and I always used to say, Our day is never boring, as every job is different! Today, this was about as different as we had ever encountered together... because we had NEVER had this scenario in our 15 years together. All in all, though, life is good! By the way, I did enough chasing around in the cold this morning, that I shall take a break tonight, and not go for my WALK, WALK, WALK, even though it is a balmy -17C tonight. ;)
