Lifehacks “Man, I found this awesome hack!” Courtney said to Lisa while sloshing her glass of milk, forming translucent curtains of white on the cup’s wall. “Oh sweet! What did you get into? Let me guess, your phone’s root file? I heard an exploit was discovered this weekend,” Lisa was glad to have a break from the sketch she was working on. “Not quite…” “What then?” “If an item at the department store ends in an eight, it’s on a manager’s discount and will probably be discounted again!” she took a sip of her milk. “That’s not a hack,” Lisa returned to tracing thick black lines over a red sketch she stenciled earlier. “Anyway, I’m pretty sure that’s a myth.” Courtney shot her a look. “Sorry, an urban legend.” “Whatever, I thought it was neat,” Courtney tried to wash away her disappointment with more milk. She might as well buy that board game now, twenty percent off is still twenty percent off. “And another thing,” Lisa put down her pencil and started a tirade of internet this, reliable source that. Courtney had heard it a million times before, and it started to annoy her like nails on a chalkboard; except this chalkboard was entirely obsessed with itself and would shout about how smart it was whenever it got a chance. She decided to mix it up. “Hush,” Courtney said. From Lisa’s perspective, the dorm faded away into ichor black with only Courtney being the only light in the room. Courtney opened Lisa’s mind and saw the inner workings of it. Sketched lines of imaginary colors were drawn throughout Lisa’s thoughts. They connected ideas, ethics, and thousands of other abstract constructs together like a big brain-scribble. Courtney tugged on one line and diverted its path from a memory of Lisa’s most recent drink to a lobe on her cerebellum, specifically to one that housed bodily urges. Courtney closed Lisa’s mind and whispered, “wake up!” “Furthermore,” Lisa paused, “Hang on, bathroom break,” and rushed off down the hall. Courtney stretched out, suddenly feeling like the room was wide-open. She pulled on her coat and headed out to the department store. She decided it would be a good idea to take her time and stroll around the store for a bit. Lisa always got a little upset when she realized that her mind had been messed with. Honestly though, what did they expect when they allowed mortals and divine beings to room with each other? #fantasy #writing #flashfiction #shortstory
