Light in a Dark World 2 Corinthians 4:6 On the first day of creation, God said, Let there be light: and there was light (Gen.1:3). Light is very important for our existence. Without it there would be no life. The same is true for our spiritual lives. Darkness is used at times in Scripture to illustrate evil, sin, and the lack of God in ones life. When Jesus Christ, God in flesh, was born into human race, He brought light into the darkness of this world. Isaiah prophesied that the people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined (Isa.9:2---The apostle John also referred to Jesus as the “light” (John 1:9). Jesus referred to himself as “the light of the world” (John 8:12). ). Jesus fulfilled this prophecy (Matt.4:16) and said of Himself, I am the light of the world: he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life (Jn.8:12). When we receive Jesus Christ as our Savior and become saints in light, He enlightens our life, for He hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son (Col.1:12b-13). Having been taken out of darkness, those who claim Christ as Savior are to have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them (Eph.5:11---Light and darkness cannot coexist, so children of the light (5:8) must take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness. Believers must separate themselves from sin, having no part of it. This does not mean that believers must be separate from unbelievers, but they must “take no part” in their sinful actions. It is important to avoid activities that result in sin, but we must go even further. Paul instructed believers to rebuke and expose these deeds because silence may be interpreted as approval. Just as the light shines into darkness and exposes what is hidden, so the light of Christ, through a believer, should shine into the darkness of sin and expose it for what it is. God needs people who will take an active and vocal stand against sin and permissiveness in all its forms (see Leviticus 19:17). Christians must lovingly speak out for what is true and right.). Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light (Rom.13:12)---12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. 13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. 14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.. For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light (Eph.5:8). We are also to be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; holding forth the word of life (Phil.2:15-16a---Yet even through these somber words a ray of light was shining. If Paul were indeed to die, he would rejoice and desire that they would share his joy. Paul was content, knowing that he had helped the Philippians live for Christ. Paul was able to have joy, even though he faced possible execution. When you are totally committed to serving Christ, sacrificing to build the faith of others brings a joyous reward. Paul considered it a privilege to die for the faith, and he wanted the Philippians to take the same attitude in the case of his death.). Every child of God should be a reflection of the light of Christ (Matt.5:14, 16---14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.---“You are the light of the world.” As salt makes a difference in people’s food, so light makes a difference in their surroundings. Jesus would later explain, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t be stumbling through darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). Christ’s disciples must would later explain, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t be stumbling through darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). Christ’s disciples must live for Christ, shining like a city on a mountain, glowing in the night for all to see. They are like lights in a dark world, showing clearly what Christ is like. Because Jesus is the light of the world, his followers must reflect his LIFE.bpitts10.wix/doingjesuswork Brian Pitts and African Missions with Samuel Arthur and Oscar Wanja Spreading the love of Christ in Africa and abroad bpitts10.wix LikeLike · · Share Marina Julius likes this.
