Ligue 1 2013/14 - OM kick-off their season with a visit to promoted Guingamp Olympique Marseille kick-off their Ligue 1 season with a visit to promoted Guingamp, on Sunday in the closing game of Day 1. Unexpected runners-up to Paris saint-Germain last season, OM reinforced their side this summer in order to carry on playing with the big boys right on top of the table, not to mention their participation in the UEFA Champions League. They recruited Le Havre’s defender Benjamin Mendy, Guingamp’s midfielder Giannelli Imbula and strikers Dimitri Payet and Saber Khlifa from Lille and Evian TG, while sending Florian Raspentino and Modou Sougou on loan. « A good season means that you make it to the top three. For a club like Marseille, it is their duty to finish among the first three. On paper it is difficult to compete with PSG and Monaco, but football is not played on paper. « We had a good 2012-2013 season. We just need to obey the same basic principles and be more consistent. One never knows what can happen in football. A club like OM has to be ambitious and play with the best, » warned Olympique Marseille’s captain and goalkeeper, Steve Mandanda. Ligue 2 runners-up to AS Monaco last season, Guingamp will aim to secure a long term spot among the elite, and therefore try to gather a maximum of points at home.
