Like many of my fellow Saint Francis Troubies, I have spent the past few hours in deep grief, mourning and love. As I scroll through Facebook at work, I see so many of us, sharing stories, pictures, fellowship, about an incredible man. Mr. Dodson, was not just a teacher. He taught us so much. I made life long friends both in his classroom and during his detention. Ive given and received messages from classmates I have not spoken to in months, maybe even years. This is what he helped build. This SF community, that knows no time or space. This community of sisterhood that reaches across miles to hold each other up. He made sure that our bonds started the first day of freshmen year, the first time I met him. His class ensured that we creatively and playfully still learned. He never let us lose that child like curiosity of gaining knowledge and insight. Whether it was through skits we had to write, comic books we had to draw, or just through goofy days in the classroom. He taught us that everyone, even our teachers, had to respect us. And only when a bond had been built, was the formality of calling each student Ms. this, removed and were we allowed to be called by last name. Although in my case, he still called me Ms. Clark, even when I came back to campus. He loved his job, his students, and this community. So Troubies, friends, sisters, let us mourn. Let us remember the days of detention. The flash mobs. The silent, yet goofy stares. And let us not ever forget the life of Brian Dodson. It is through us, through our actions, that his memory will go on. Let him not be lost to myth or legend, for myths and legends are often forgotten between dusty pages. Rather, let him become a living example, through all of us. In days of goofiness. In days of companionship. In days of throwing conformity out the window and being ourselves, for the pure sake of staying true. He will live on, but only if we chose to live as he did. O God, whose days are without end, and whose mercies cannot be numbered: Make us, we pray, deeply aware of the shortness and uncertainty of human life; and let your Holy Spirit lead us in holiness and righteousness all our days; that, when we shall have served you in our generation, we may be gathered to our ancestors, having the testimony of a good conscience, in the communion of the Catholic Church, in the confidence of a certain faith, in the comfort of a religious and holy hope, in favor with you, our God, and in perfect charity with the world. All this we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord.
