Like many people, Louisiana resident Scott Lane didnt see the harm - TopicsExpress

Like many people, Louisiana resident Scott Lane didnt see the harm in official school prayer during graduation or football games, or in a science teacher mentioning her religious beliefs when discussing evolution. That was until his stepson — who was raised a Buddhist — enrolled in the sixth grade and endured an onslaught of abuse and taunting by the very teachers and administrators who are meant to educate and protect students. Scott and his family turned to the ACLU, and we jumped in immediately. Our lawyers filed a federal lawsuit against the school district, and nearly 50,000 ACLU supporters signed our petition with Scott and Sharon Lane, ramping up the public pressure on the Department of Justice to investigate religious discrimination in Sabine Parish Schools. Without the ACLU, Scott and his family would have nowhere to turn to seek justice. Please make a monthly pledge of $10 or more today so that the ACLU can be there to speak up, guard liberty, and demand justice whenever and wherever were needed. (Please note: If you forward or distribute, the links will open a page with your information filled in.) One of the main reasons we were able to act so quickly and decisively in a case like this was the steady stream of support the ACLU receives from our monthly donors, our Guardians of Liberty. And believe me; the story of Scott and his son is far from an isolated incident. From the teaching of creationism — including taking children on trips to the Creation Museum as part of the science curriculum — to leading students in school-sponsored prayer — far too many teachers and administrators are running roughshod over religious freedom, openly imposing their personal religious views on young students. The parents whose children have religion pushed on them in public schools and are singled-out and discriminated against have nowhere else to turn but the ACLU. With our on-the-ground presence in every state, we are there to respond and do whatever it takes to make sure students religious liberty is protected. But we need your support.
