Like most of France, we love melon, with a few slices of dried ham or a splash of Porto in the well of a half. So we’re excited about Friday’s “Fête du Melon de Lectoure” in Saint-Louis, which hosts the annual event as a way of sharing the culture of its “twin” city of Lectoure (from the southwest of France). Starting at 8h, city organizers and volunteers will sell the famed Lectoure melons at nine different venues around town. At the Salle des Fêtes behind Place Gissy (down the street from the Saturday market), other southwest specialties such as foie gras, cassoulet and garlic will also be sold at great prices; we snuck in early and were amazed. Any remaining stock will go on sale at the Salle on Saturday. Last year, they ran out by 15h on Friday, and were 2€ each – double what the on-sale “Charentais” melons are going for this week at local supermarkets. But nothing compares to a great quality melon.
