Like my mom, I celebrate Armistice Day. It is also known as Veterans Day in the United States, and Remembrance Day in Great Britain. The holiday was established to honor this date in 1918 when Germany and the Allies signed an armistice agreement to end hostilities in World War I. WWI was war to end of all wars. The armistice was signed at six a.m. on November 11, and the cease-fire took effect five hours later, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. At 11AM there is a 2 minute silence; the first minute for veterans fallen and fellow comrades, the second for those left behind. I really have no truck with all the flags flying the hideous nationalism that seems to go with it and the celebration of war. Men and women dying, often in the most hideous fashion is not to be celebrated by mattress sales but deserves a moment of reflection and caution as we contemplate other military actions. Our mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, fought and died in wars not so we would celebrate them but would force us to ask ourselves, is this next military effort really be worth the lives of our sons and daughters We thank them for giving us that gift.
