Like you Ive been watching and grieving the death, violence and desperation in Ferguson, Missouri. For those of us who lived through the sixties it is a surreal experience to see military might on neighborhood streets in America ... again. This is such a complicated issue on so many fronts. The death of unarmed 18 year old Michael Brown and peoples lack of faith in the investigation. The police officer who probably believes he had no choice but to use deadly force. The heavy police presence and how militarization has become a part of local policing in Ferguson and across the country. Poverty. Joblessness. Hopelessness. Agitators. Instigators. The media spotlight. Fear. Anger. The plight of young African American men who feel isolated, abandoned, ignored. Poor parenting and lack of education. The widening rift between the haves and have nots. There are a lot of forces pushing and pulling against each other. The sooner calm heads prevail and policy makers get to work on these deep seated social issues, the better for everyone, especially the children of Ferguson who should be in school this week... learning lessons in academics instead of violence.
