Linfieldfc spoke to David Jeffrey ahead of an eventful weekend. “I’d just like to wish the members of Steeple True Blues all the very best as they undertake a sponsored walk from Antrim to our game against Ards in Ballyclare on Saturday. They are a long established supporters’ club and I remember way, way back in my Testimonial year at the club, they were very generous with me. They have always been very passionate supporters of Linfield. That’s part of their ethos but they‘ve also always been thinking of others. They’ve always been great supporters of various charities, so it came as no surprise to me when I heard that they were doing this 10 mile walk in support of the Children’s Hospice - the terrific cause that our club is proudly displaying on our shirts. I really hope that our supporters will give generously to support the Steeple members to acknowledge and reward them for their efforts in support of this most worthwhile of causes. We always congratulate our teams when we win but it’s also important to commiserate with our teams when we don’t win. So I want to praise our girls on their tremendous efforts in getting to the League Cup final on Monday and I want them to put behind them any disappointment they felt at not winning on the night. They now face a massive game - the Irish Cup final against Crusaders on Saturday evening and I hope and hope and hope our girls can record what would be a superb victory. That night when I watched our girls win the County Antrim FA Final at Newforge, our girls were quite magnificent and I don’t think anyone, except probably our own girls expected them to get the terrific 4-0 result we got. If our girls keep that same level of belief and same level of desire and if we focus on what that matters - the game ahead of us, rather than the game that’s over and done with, then all things are possible. Of course, Crusaders are a highly successful, vastly experienced and long established side and I just want to wish our girls and our staff all the very best and I hope they can pull off what would be another terrific result. I want to congratulate Ross Glendinning on his call up to the Northern Ireland U21 squad. He leaves on Friday as part of the squad that will play in Belgium on Monday night. It’s tremendous when our players are recognised by the international set up at whatever level, so good luck to Ross for his time away with the under 21 international squad. It means Ross who’s been on the bench in our last few games won’t be in our squad for Saturday’s game against Ards but obviously, Aaron Burns will return to the squad following his automatic one game suspension. A very eventful weekend will conclude with what should be a celebratory evening in the Viewing Lounge for our Academy squad that brought great credit to the club through their heroic exploits in San Marino over the summer. I hope they will all have a very enjoyable evening as recognition and reward for a superb effort in finishing runners up in such a prestigious tournament on the European stage.”
