Link to Letter: ppulse/letters-14583.114136-Yes-Vote-is-Critical.html Letter: ‘Yes’ Vote is Critical In 2013, 1,503 of the approximately 5,000 Southern Door registered voters said no to the school referendum. The students, teachers, and parents paid the price for that outcome. Who will pay the price if the majority of voters once again vote no? The cuts will severely impact our students, staff, parents and, ultimately, all taxpayers in Southern Door. You might wonder why. The cuts will further add to the work overload of our school staff, causing more to accept other opportunities, deprive our students of a well-rounded education, and create an even greater need for more revenue – by driving away our best teachers and causing even more students to enroll elsewhere. For every student who open enrolls into another school district, our district has to pay up to $6,635 to the receiving district. You do the math. Closing our schools will most likely not be an option, as happened in Florence County, Wis., where there were three failed referendums (the majority of our voters said no in 2011 and 2013). Our school district is this communitys greatest asset. Your yes vote is critical to ensure this remains true. Referendum numbers obtained from Jill Lau, County Clerk of Door County. Open enrollment cost obtained from the Southern Door School District office. Marilyn Fitzgerald-White Forestville, Wis. October 23, 2014
