Listening to the Berlin Rundfunk Choir sing the Rachmaninoff Vespers at the Church of St Mary the Virgin in midtown Manhattan last night was a transcendental event. The sense of a spiritual dimension trumping the day-to-day was omnipresent. For an extraordinary seventy-five minutes we were in a realm far away from all that is commonplace and maddening about life; and outside the trouble that ourselves and others engage in. I have often noted on this page that, though I cannot get my head around the idea of a supreme being, I do embrace the notion of mystery in life. Just as I also do believe in the profound spirituality of art... which is my ongoing escape from moments of despair and a sense of being overwhelmed by the inanity of human disputes.
