Literary agents tend to have a questionable reputation among writers. Some see them as nothing more than middle men. I have nothing but admiration and respect for them. I meet a lot of agents at book fairs as part of the process of selling the foreign, film and audio rights of my work. Almost all of of them are kind, graceful souls who have a unique love for writing and writers, and a critical understanding of the business side of producing and selling books. They are generous with their advice and are happy to share their experiences, even if we dont end up working together. As the publishing landscape changes, everything seems to suggest that traditional publishers are going to change dramatically, much like the music industry. Somehow though, I believe agents will still be around for a long time and will continue to play a valuable role in this industry. Writers, if you have a good agent, hold on to them.
