Little Feat usually (and criminally) gets lumped into jam band - TopicsExpress

Little Feat usually (and criminally) gets lumped into jam band territory. I suppose they became that after a time, but their eponymous debut is nothing short of spectacular. They were ex-Mothers of Invention and their take on southern swamp rock shows the affiliation. There is humor and no shortage of virtuosity, but Lowell George had a serious side that demonstrates a greater emotional range than he could access with Zappa (he liked to brag, however, that Frank kicked him out because of the weed reference in Willin). The piano and slide playing alone on this record are enough to keep me coming back, but these SONGS just stay with me. I remember working the door at a party my freshman year of college and writing lyrics from this album on every single solo cup I handed out. Odd looks from all; maybe it made sense once my friend and I got lit enough to sing every single song at the top of our voices. We stumbled home belting belting out all the songs from Tonights the Night. Nothing compares to the discovery of records like this, particularly at that age. No shame, pure enthusiasm.
