Little known facts about me: Megan Rochelle asked me to do 4, but as I want to exceed expectations whenever possible here are 5 - 1). I have an inherent affinity for anything old or historical. 2). I have been known to expend great effort trying to get my gas pump charge to an even number. 3). Speaking of gas, I kinda like that smell, and mothballs, and cow manure, and diesel fumes (the last two are childhood associations, I think). 4). I am a nuclear babe, at least according to what General Omar Bradley, who I met as a child, told Rev. Billy Graham (long story). 5). I have Pirate Blood - kinda sorta maybe. The name Lafitte is in my family going back to my Great-Great grandfather Lafitte Fate Balding who was born in the 1820s. Fate and his family were quite mysterious. According to family lore they came to the mountains of North Carolina from Charleston, but we are related to the New Orleans Lafittes. That is all hard to document, but apparently the pirate Jean Lafitte (he was really more of a smuggler and gangster than true pirate) had an adopted son (who may really have been his illegitimate son), who did flee to Charleston from Galveston, TX after the Lafitte organization ran afoul of the US government for the second time and their operations in Texas were raided. The truth is elusive as the Lafittes themselves, but I nevertheless am compelled to have a drink at the Lafitte Blacksmith Shop each time I visit New Orleans.
