Little things matter. (This seems to align with Lalenyas post the other day. Funny how it works.) In line at Safeway and the gentleman ahead of me, who was next in line to pay, steps out of line and leaves. The lady ahead of me tosses her garbage into the pile of grocery baskets. So I picked it out and smiled at her and said as politely as I could, Here, Ill find a garbage for you. And I tucked it into my pocket. She looks startled, and says Oh! Thanks. But thats what theyre for.... and continues mumbling to herself. And then stays at the end of the conveyor belt until her groceries are getting closer to the register. So I tap her on the shoulder and ask her to move up a little (the previous customer was walking away) so I could put my groceries on the belt (which is now half empty) and she sneers at me, mumbles and steps forward by about a foot. I notice the gentleman who had stepped out of line was back, but behind a lady with a cart full of groceries. So I told him to take his place in line (he only had two items anyways.) The lady directly behind me with the cart full of items got offended and wanted to go ahead of me, too. I explained to her that he had already been in front of me so he was really taking his proper place in line anyways. She called me something and I ignored her. The lady ahead of me finally moved forward, but only enough that the gentleman couldnt reach the bar to put between their items. So he placed his groceries on the belt with a good distance between. Very obviously a new sale. She signed heavily and made a big deal about his items being too close, and he started to apologize. I offered that maybe if she had moved forward a few more inches or (heaven forbid), actually place the bar down herself, there would be no further confusion and she could continue enjoying her wonderful day. She scowled at me. I think I was just given a free face peel. She pays for her groceries. Demands her knife stickers because I may as well get something for the exorbitant prices Im paying at this damned store. Stops to talk to the grocery bagger whom she obviously knew, blocking the gentleman from leaving. And blocking me from paying for my own groceries, which were about to be finished. So I pipe up again, Excuse me, maam - can you step around the corner so the rest of us can continue our day too? Aaaand, hell hath no fury than a self righteous person with a messed up sense of entitlement being called on by a PEON. HOW DARE I interfere with her conversation?? She moves. The gentleman left, but not before smiling at me and giving me a thanks. I ask the associate if she has a garbage can, since the lady ahead of me confused the grocery baskets with a trash can. The lady ahead of me glared and stomped off in a huff. The girl at the register gave me extra stickers and apologized that she couldnt do more, because she had noticed everything I had done there. And what did I do? Nothing that anyone with a heart and a sense of decency wouldnt do. No point in getting angry, but no point in getting walked on either. I might finally be getting the hand of this whole balance thing.
