Liverpool/Swansea disciplinary verdict: Shelvey charged, Sterling skates So, for the record, it’s not cool to swing your arm backward to hit an opponent during the run of play, but slapping them in the face off the field is fine. Swansea City’s Jonjo Shelvey has joined Newcastle’s Papiss Cisse as players to be charged for incidents during this weekend’s Premier League games, while Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling will not face discipline for his shot to the face of an opponent (Cisse will miss Newcastle’s next two Premier League matches and Jan. 3’s FA Cup match). Shelvey could be suspended for three games for his offense in the second half against Liverpool on Monday. Though he claims it was unintentional, the Swans midfielder appeared to purposefully swing his arm back at Emre Can, striking the player in the face. Garry Monk will not be pleased. “I don’t think it was an intentional elbow at all and the referee was perfectly placed. “No-one had a better view of the incident than him. He felt it didn’t warrant any more action and the game went on. “There were no complaints from any of the players afterwards, so you have to trust the referee made the right decision – and we thought that he did.” Meanwhile, Sterling’s poke at Federico Fernandez after the pair tussled past the end line is going to go unpunished. After Fernandez grasped the back of Sterling’s head, the Liverpool man swung at his opponent’s face, catching Fernandez on the jaw. Shelvey can appeal his charge.
