Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has praised the attitude and commitment of midfielder Jordan Henderson as he continues his improvement this season. The ex-Sunderland star is also reportedly close to signing a new deal with the Anfield oufit. Speaking to Jamie Carragher on Sky Sports, Rodgers praised Henderson due to his continual improvement this season and how important he has now become after a difficult start at the club. Henderson has played in every match in the Premier League this season and completed all but one. Henderson was stunning a 5-0 demolition of Tottenham earlier in the season. He importance the team is now quite clear and Rodgers can see it, too. “I always liked Jordan [Henderson],” Rodgers claimed while speaking to Carragher at Melwood, Liverpool’s training ground. “From the outside looking in, I saw him as a young player at Sunderland and I remember watching a game on tele and thought, ‘what a really good player that was’. Then I remembered watching his progress and thinking, ‘this boy’s a real talent’. “Then when I came here, I was taken aback by his physicality. He’s got great stature to him and I was working with a really, really honest boy.” At one point, it seemed that Henderson was on his way out of Anfield but Rodgers explained why he chose to keep him at the club. “I was having to trim the squad at the time, I was having to balance wages and looking to get players in. I certainly didn’t want to push Jordan out of the door but we had a real honest conversation towards the end of the window when a few clubs were interested in him. And from that conversation, he showed me the appetite that he wanted to succeed here at Liverpool. (james)
