Living In Cohousing: A Free Seminar. Saturday, July 20th, 7 – 9:30 pm Unitarian Universalist Congregation Meeting House 997 Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike, Bridgehampton, NY What if you could live a comfortable, middle-class lifestyle on 40% less energy and resources than used by similar households in your area? What if young families joined together to build affordable homes instead of being driven out of state by luxury home prices? What if your family could choose to be a one-car-household in a neighborhood where you could share a ride to work or have childcare or elder care provided by a trusted friend? All of this is possible when collaborating with like-minded people to live in “Cohousing”. Cohousing communities (sometimes called eco-villages) are created by groups of people who want to live cooperatively as good stewards of the earth and of each other. A common feature among these diverse communities are dwellings designed and situated to incorporate the latest energy conserving technologies, often built as duplex apartments or cluster homes in the interest of preserving open space. Because of the proximity of smaller private dwellings and shared use of certain common facilities, cohousing offers an alternative to the isolation inherent in suburban, single-family housing, and to the high cost of homes in general. People who live in cohousing say their communities are like the close-knit neighborhoods that made up the best of small-town America in earlier generations. Come learn about this growing trend with one of the pioneers of the movement, long time cohousing resident and architect, Laura Fitch, A.I.A. She’ll answer these questions and any more that you might ask: What does cohousing look like? What is it like to live in a cohousing community? Why are baby boomers and young families drawn to cohousing? How might cohousing take shape in your region and how can you make it happen? To register or for more information email Virginia Gerardi vmg4ecoliving@gmail or call (516) 729-1462 Doors open at 6:30. Light refreshments will be served
