Living where we do with an abundance of parks and trails and dunes, Robert and I decided to gift each other new snow shoes for Christmas. I just ordered what I hope will be the perfect pair from Jake Thamm at Crescent Moon Snowshoes in Boulder, Colorado. Jake and his wife are the founders of Crescent Moon, who have devised a binding system that promises to be easy enough to be enjoyable for beginners like us. Jake was so helpful in guiding my selection that I ordered directly from him, rather than shopping for savings via Amazon or some other discount outlet. I paid a little more, but I know Im getting the most current model and exactly the right fit, and if we have any problems Jake told me to call him directly and he would help us out. This past weekend, I ordered Madagascar Vanilla Beans directly from Beanilla, a small, locally owned specialty company located in Comstock Park. Meantime, my friend Tonya of Must Love Dogs Boutique & Spa in Grand Haven is working to source a replacement specialty dog bed for me. Im learning that with a little creativity and research, it is possible to expand the boundaries of buy local and still support small, American companies even if you prefer the convenience of shopping online.
