Ljubljana scored another participants’ record Maraton Franja, organized for the 33rd time in the capital city of Slovenia could benefit of perfect weather conditions with sun during the whole weekend. On Sunday, the temperature event went above 30 degrees Celsius. A total of 7600 participants took part in one of the cycling events during these three days. 420 riders started in the time trial on Friday, coming from 26 different nationalties. The best overall time was for German Alexander Bauer (46) who beated a lot of his younger opponents with an average speed of 49.5km/h. Slovenian Andrej Gucek got second at 14 seconds and former World Champion Igor Kopce completed the podium at 20 seconds. The fastest female in the time trial was Slovenian Danijela Svetik (32) with an average speed of 42.1km/h. Hungarian Monika Kiraly finished second while Teja Gulic got third. The family marathon on Saturday on a 25km course outside the city attracted more than 3500 riders, all going for a fun ride. The main event of the weekend, the roadraces on Sunday got 1886 starters for the granfondo (157km) and 1680 for the mediofondo (97km) counting both as qualifying distance, respectively for men below 60- women below 50 and men above 60 – women above 50. After 32 editions, the organizers did a test with starts per combined age groups instead of a mass start. It turned out to be succesfull and a good rehearsal for the World Championships in August. Fastest time in the men’s granfondo was for Italian Giuseppe Di Salvo, beating his compatriot Alessandro Garziera and Slovenian Primoz Porenta in the sprint. The women’s granfondo was won by Hungarian Monika Kiraly who did one place better than her timetrial result. She beated Slovenian Laura Simenc in the sprint. Austrian Brigitte Krebs scored the third time. The mediofondo was the qualifying distance for men 60+ and women 50+. Fastest men overall in these age groups was Austrian Johann Taucher while Slovenian Andreja Trojar was the fastest woman.
