Local Catholics Respond to Bishop’s Cathedral High School Address SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB)- On Saturday Springfield Bishop Mitchell Rozanski addressed the community about the future of Cathedral High School. While the bishop commends supporters — he reiterated that financial challenges within the diocese make the option to rebuild seem un-realistic. On Sunday we heard reaction to the bishop’s latest statement. “It’s not an unexpected answer, we felt they were leaning that way, even though they say they’re objective. “We understand the sustainability question,” says Springfield’s Daryl DeVillier. Daryl shares in some of the concerns that the bishop raises. If the diocese continues to operate the school as it has for the last several decades; it will not survive. “The fact of the matter is they haven’t done enough,” he explains. But looking forward, DeVillier says, there are other creative solutions: like new marketing strategies, techniques to engage alumni, and turning over leadership. “If they don’t want to run the project anymore or Cathedral anymore, then like any other corporation or business when the finances are tight… outsource,” he recommends. He continues to explain that the FEMA funds allocated will help to rebuild. “Say you have to build a school for 35 million dollars and that’s the challenge we have to face. Well guess what if we can’t get it done than that’s on us, not the bishop,” says DeVillier. The Committee for Cathedral Action isn’t the only group, some who came out of mass this morning at Sacred Heart Church also wish for a different outcome. “Hopefully our diocese can come to some way of finding other funding sources; I think it’d be a real tragedy to lose it,” says John Chalfant. A final decision is expected to be announced by the bishop in the coming weeks.
