Local Governments across Australia could soon access up to two - TopicsExpress

Local Governments across Australia could soon access up to two years-worth of personal information including social media, location data and mobile phone records including all Perth Council areas. The Abbott Governments plan is to introduce legislation that would make it easier for local councils to access detailed information about its’ rate payers. These laws will require telecommunications companies and social media sites to hold up to two years-worth of customer information, which local governments could then request without needing to apply for a warrant. It doesn’t matter if that ratepayer has committed a crime or not, their personal information will be stored and accessible as though they are a criminal. We already know that councils are collecting data from residents mobile phones, corruption watchdogs and the Australian Taxations Office to conduct criminal investigations or enforce fines for unregistered pets and illegal rubbish dumping.” The Greens have launched a campaign to stop the legislation from passing through the Parliament, with an online competition and petition to call their local Labor member asking them to step up and block the laws.
