Local Gov’t Ministry moves operations to Ashanti Region temporarily The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has moved its operations unit to the Ashanti Region temporarily, to enable it work in collaboration with the Coordinating Council. Throughout the month of December, the Minister, Julius Debrah and his two deputies- Nii Lantey Vanderpuye and Emmanuel Agyekum- and other directors, will operate and conduct business from the region. Myjoyonline understands this forms part of efforts by government to decentralize the system and take local governance closer to the citizenry. The Ministers have for the past two weeks, been working together with the Regional Minister and the Coordinating Director in preparation for the next Sanitation Day exercise, which will be observed on Saturday, January 3, 2015 in Ashanti specifically. Speaking with Myjoyonline Mr. Debrah said his outfit intends to replicate the action in the remaining regions. He said normal business would be conducted from Accra virtually via electronic means which will be at no extra cost to government. The Minister said the decision will also offer them the opportunity to interact with residents of various assemblies in the regions to inform the specific actions to be taken to meet their needs, which also falls in line with the Ministry’s four thematic plans which was launched in September. The four thematic plans are; Environmental Sanitation, Decentralization and Empowerment of Assemblies, Small and Micro Enterprises Development as well as Job Creation and Social Housing. In a related development, Mr Debrah on Sunday supervised the clearing of a huge refuse popularly called by residents as “Borla Kɛseɛ” at Abuakwa. The ‘mountain of garbage’ was known to be the biggest dump site in the country. On Monday, December 22, 2014, Mr. Debrah and his entourage toured the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in Ashanti to inspect progress of ongoing developmental projects. - He also used the opportunity to interact with elders, chiefs, and the residents. Some of the districts visited included Sekyere South, Sekyere East and Asokore Mampong.
