Local Headlines For Full Reports, Listen to WHAV News (WHAV.net/listen) Every Day Free State Awards Grants to Local Nonprofits Local cultural organizations are in line for state grants as part of $14 million in new Mass Cultural Facilities Fund Grants to boost the creative sector. The Patrick Administration on Thursday announced the grants to be administered by the Massachusetts Cultural Council to support new building projects for nonprofit arts and cultural organizations, schools, and communities. Locally, The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Historic New England $210,000 to replace and upgrade various components of their Haverhill facility, historically known as the Lang building, a former shoe factory built in 1912. The project includes window replacement, electrical, lighting and life safety updates; and external concrete repair. The building serves as collections storage for 65,000 decorative and fine art objects and approximately 150,000 archival items. Also the Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Northeast Document Conservation Center of Andover $470,000 for its acquisition of a 33,000 square foot building that was built originally as a supermarket and was converted into a research and development space in the mid-1990’s. The Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) is a paper/book conservation laboratory, digital imaging studio and preservation training center for collections-holding institutions in Massachusetts. It is currently planning to move from a leased space. The fund is also providing a $9,000 feasibility and technical assistance grant to the Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce to study the feasibility of acquiring and renovating the vacant Cogswell School building for a community art center. Police Arrest Man for Alleged Attempted Murder A Haverhill man is accused of attempted murder following a reported disturbance early Thursday morning. Haverhill Police report 44-year-old Edgardo Pagan was arrested shortly after 2 a.m., Thursday at 113 Portland Street. Police, Fire Sponsor Fundraiser for Fire Victim A fundraiser is being organized by both the Haverhill police and fire departments for the family of a woman who was seriously injured during last month’s Forest Acres Apartment building fire. Christina Simoes is recovering from a back injury received after escaping the fire by jumping from a third story window with her toddler son in her arms. The boy was not injured. As many as 24 apartments in two buildings were destroyed or heavily damaged in the blaze. The day-long fundraiser for the Simoes family will be held on June 25th at Uno’s Pizza off Route 125 at the Haverhill-Plaistow state line. Uno’s will donate up to 20% of the proceeds from orders that day which are accompanied by a special coupon. Woman to Lead Haverhill Chamber A New Hampshire woman will become the next leader of the Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce. The chamber’s board of directors chose Greater Derry-Londonderry Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Stacey Bruzzese as its next President. Bruzzese, who has led the Derry-Londonderry Chamber since September of 2012, was selected by search committee from a field of more than 50 applicants. Other applicants reportedly included former Congressman and Massport head Peter I. Blute and current chamber Chairwoman Clare Macoul. She will succeed outgoing Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce President and former Haverhill City Councilor Sven Amirian. Bruzzese is also a former marketing and media director for the Greater Salem, New Hampshire Chamber of Commerce. Her first day at the helm of the Greater Haverhill Chamber is July 7.
