Local News Summary Newsroom/El Comercio de Colorado In our local section, we start by talking about the ceremonies that took place in Aurora and Denver to remember the 12 victims from the Aurora shooting. In its first anniversary, mourners gathered at the Cherry Creek Park and also attended a religious ceremony at the Saint Michael the Archangel Church, both located in Aurora. Many others returned to the site where the tragedy took place and remained in vigil overnight. * We are also presenting the opinions of three local leaders in regards to tensions after the absolution of George Zimmerman. Colorado House Representative Crisanta Duran said “there are no winners with the Treyvon Martin decision tonight.” She asks that we as a community must overcome hate and violence. On the other hand, Rev. William Golson believes the decision at George Zimmerman’s trial was made according to the law. But, he believes the judicial system must be reviewed to correct possible interpretation issues when the law is applied in self-defense, like the one in Florida. Golson urges to avoid violence, like the one occurred as a reaction to the case of African-American Martin Booker, who died while in police custody in 2011. The religious leader agrees with the opinion of Professor Ramón Del Castillo, Director of the Department of Chicano Studies at Metro State University, who asks that a dialogue be established among different social groups in the United States. “We all must listen to each other,” Del Castillo said. * We also bring the good news regarding the launching of the mobile unit for the SNAP Program. In that unit, counselors from the Department of Human Services will review individual cases to identify those who could benefit from the program. If qualified, they could walk out of the unit with a Colorado Quest debit card to be used at grocery stores and make use of their food assistance benefits.
