Local People. Local Stories. Yallourn North resident David Hood recently returned home from India where he took part in a voluntary project in rural Rajasthan. The project saw a team of volunteers work alongside local villagers to construct a dam that will capture the monsoon rains and in turn raise the level of available ground water. Local farmers will then be able to use this water throughout the rest of the year, in the normally hot and dry conditions, to grow additional crops and increase their annual income. The trip was organised by Developing World Connections, a Canadian charity organisation. In addition to working on the project, participants were able to experience the local culture, visit nearby tourist attractions and witness the local way of life first hand.
