Local agriculture has been a cornerstone of Salt Spring Island - TopicsExpress

Local agriculture has been a cornerstone of Salt Spring Island since it was first settled, and we believe that it will have an increasingly important role in our rapidly changing world. With the implementation of government regulations that required livestock to be slaughtered off island in 2007, local meat production dropped by 50%! Salt Spring Island Lamb, prized by food connoisseurs throughout the world, was in danger of fading into obscurity. There are so many reasons why we need an abattoir on Salt Spring Island: 1. More humane treatment of animals at a small, local facility. 2. Improved food security for islanders. 3. Increased economic resiliency for islanders, including additional local jobs. 4. Livelihood for farmers. 5. Local meat supply for conscientious restaurants and local consumers 6. Helps sustain the rural feel and character of the island. 7. Local food production reduces fossil fuel consumption.
