Location Luang Prabang city is one of the world heritages with a population of more than 1, 032 Hmong families depend on agriculture and don’t earn much money. Parents often have had to sell cows and other family valuables and make sacrifices for many years to pay for studies. When families do not have enough money to support their children at school, they tell their children to drop out. Therefore many give up hope of ever finishing high school or going to college to continue their education and get stuck at this point. Having to leave school under such conditions causes many problems; many students leave school with sadness when they realize that their parents cannot support them for further studies and they have to leave school before they are prepared to get a good job. This is a special problem for young girls in our society who are not allowed the same flexibility as boys to find jobs and on-the-job training. Market Research The survey was started from 28 to 29 December, 2012 in Luangprabang. 200 questionnaires were distributed to 66 high school students (main target), 39 businesses owners and agents, 28 teachers, 52 officers and 15 to others. Based on the result of the survey, the information was found out as following: The result we found that many students last resources is to be a novice at temples. And very few of them who work at restaurants, hotels, trekking agencies are supported by foreign visitors Who we are The leader of My English Center was orphaned at a very young age. His parents passed away when he was 3 years old. He grew up in a poor Hmong family, the last of 5 children and is the only one in the family who could go to school but had a very limited opportunity to study. In 1999, he finished high school and wanted to continue to the National University of Laos, but this was financially impossible. So, after high school, he worked for a while as a tour guide at a trekking company but his abilities in English language were very limited. He wanted to learn more but could not afford to continue his studies. He was very fortunate that one of the foreign visitors in a trekking party offered to pay for his studies at Lao-American College where he recently graduated with a Bachelor in Business Management on 29 March, 2013. My English Center is created (Objectives) My English is created under such conditions causes many problems and hopes to serve them as detail below: a) To encourage high-school students to speak English and provide instruction for international tests, such as IELT and TOEFL, so that they can apply for opportunities to continue studying and win scholarships to study abroad. b) To provide micro-finance loans to poor students, parents and other people who want to upgrade their English skills but do not have the financial means to do so. My English Center will create a Mutual Fund from enrollment fees and profits, and attract business sponsors and Banks to participate in order to make micro-finance loans at a zero or low interest rate. The result would be that under-privileged students will be able to continue their education and, with their ability to speak English, they would be more apt to get a good job. Then they would be able to pay-back their loan from their future earnings. Poor people have a good reputation for paying back loans and helping others. We shall especially target girls as they have a hard time getting an education and finding jobs in our society. We started to teach a class two weeks ago for free. The village school allows us to use classrooms. On the first week, there are about 10 students come to the class. They are so excited to study English. One girl carried her baby sister to the class. We started at 4:30 pm and ended when they can no longer see the board. To establish My English Center for the long term, we must raise money to pay teachers, electricity, supplies, and loans for poor children to attend. What We Need & What You Get Even though we began teaching for two weeks and in order to keep going for that we need a budget of US$ 5,500 to support the center : 1. To install electricity and lamps in classrooms $2,000. We need this because we can use classroom at night. 2. Fans- it is hot and students cannot focus the studies $500 3. White Boards $600 4. Teachers’ salaries $1,000 5. Materials; text books, office supplies...etc. $900 6. To rent the school $ 500. This amount of money can rent a building and will last for 5 years. • Even the required fund does not meet, we do something, for example, we get about 50% of the required fund, and we can install electricity and lamps. This is the basic need. $10: A handwritten thank you card made by the children to the address you provide with local stamps! $25: A handwritten thank you card made by the children mailed to the address you provide with local stamps, as well as emailed thank you video and photographs of the children and their community. $50: A handwritten thank you card made by the children and assortment of a few small Hmong crafts (such as change purse, glass coasters) mailed to the address you provide with local stamps! $100: A handwritten thank you card made by the children and tote bag with Hmong design mailed to the address you provide with local stamps! $200: A handwritten thank you card made by the children with photo album of the local Hmong village, the families of the children, cultural activities, etc. $500: A handwritten thank you card made by the children and your name on a plaque at the school, giving you special recognition for your contribution $1000: all of the above, plus 2 nights at a hotel in Luangprabang so that you can visit the school and be a guest teacher (no deadline for the hotel…come whenever you can) The Impact • Our goal is to create a system that allow student to go out in person and come back with some new ideas. Then we encourage them to be published. Other Ways You Can Help What we really like you to help is that please speak this massage out to people who you know and ask them to do the same you do and ask them to see the campaign at indiegogo, Facebook, tojsiab.
