Loch Lomond was written as a love song about two lovers who were captured by the English and taken to London where he was tried and hung as a Jacobite rebel her taking of the high road was meant to signify the real road where the low road was where the fairies and elfin folk took the spirits of the Scottish dead back to their homeland. It is a beautiful song in its slow version and stirs up the blood of all Scots when sung in the fast version by the Tartan Army.
