Locke is my favorite film of 2014 so far. It is hard to believe that a film existing only in a car with one actor can rise to such an emotionally resonating achievement, but it does. I am not gonna lie...when Ivan Lockes second car phone call is related to speaking with someone about concrete I thought...oh, this could be boring. The film builds tension and chaotic synchronicity with incredible skill. The less you know going into the film, the better because the film is really rather simple, small, and doesnt revel in a lot of major twists. It is metaphoric, allegorical, existential, internal, external: the car becomes a universe in and of itself; a bubble where time is stacked past/present/future in a combustible pressure cooker spinning out of control unto rebirth with a central character who careens between pschologically mad and powerfully centered. Tom Hardy is a marvel to watch. 90 minutes of close-ups on this attractive and mega-talented man never gets boring. In fact, I couldnt believe how quickly the film was over. It felt like it had just begun. By the end of the film, I was thinking Ivan Locke could easily be translated into a Season of True Detective as a character every bit as intriguing and multi-faceted as Rust Cohle. Hardy would be such a HUGE asset to that high caliber series! LOCKE exists in a similar cinematic space as recent character-centric films like GRAVITY, ALL IS LOST, or BURIED. However, the depth that Tom Hardy brings to Ivan Locke elevates this film high above all of those for me. If Tom Hardy is forgotten during award season for this visceral performance... What a shame, what a shame.
