Log of Our Week with Daddy in Brevard, 7-7-14 - 7-11-14 Our first adventure came as a surprise to me. As we were eating breakfast on Tuesday morning, Elizabeth said, “I want to eat lunch at Dugan’s and go to Little Sliding Rock.” I figured Daddy would want to take it easy the first day, after driving 7 hours, but, instead, he said, “I’ll do whatever y’all want to do.” So, the three of us set out. Tom had a long meeting at the college all day, so he couldn’t join us. We described the walk to the water, up a gravel road about a halfmile, and Daddy said, “I’ll go at my own pace.” Lunch at Dugan’s Pub was awesome … Reuben sandwich, a big burger, and a plateful of waffle fries covered in the “works.” Guess who got that. Then, we set out in Pisgah National Forest. About a twenty-minute drive along the Davidson River, past the Fish Hatchery, and up into the higher hills to a remote, secret spot for sliding that only a few of us know about. Well … sort of true. We took our time, as Daddy wasn’t used to the incline of the road, and we rested on rocks, mossy banks, and such, til we made it all the way. The rush of cold water grew louder as we walked, and our anticipation grew. I wondered if Daddy would walk all the way and put up with our loud screams of laughter sliding down the slick, cold rock … but, before I forget, we met a fellow traveler on the way that caused great alarm. I will save that story for the end, but note it here so I (and you) won’t forget. I may need reminding. The water was ice cold, as usual. Elizabeth insisted I slide with her, which I was happy to do!. Daddy found a comfortable perch on the opposite side of the lower pool, perfect for capturing our action on film. it was awesome, to quote Elizabeth. As for me, I managed to slide at “Mom speed” and never mastered the turn-around moves that Elizabeth tried to teach me. Oh well, at least I shredded a pair of shorts.
