Long post warning, but this happened today, and to say my blood is boiling is an understatement! Hi Mr Hendry, My name is McCall Scott, my son is Cooper - a 6th grader at T.I.S. and a PE student of yours. I feel like it’s appropriate to tell you that I have NEVER written or talked to a teacher, administrator, coach, etc. about an incident or issue with any of my kids, but I must admit my blood is boiling today, and I’m coming to you with an issue. I also think you should know that when Cooper came home & told me about the incident, he wasn’t sad or upset - he kind of laughed it off, but I won’t let this go that easily. As I understand it, during the physical fitness test today, the students were being tested on several things including pull-ups. Cooper said he jumped up & started doing “kipping” pull-ups and was told in front of everyone “STOP! We aren’t doing CrossFit pull-ups - those are for girls!!” My issue has NOTHING to do with the fact that strict pull ups aren’t allowed for the test - I agree, every movement has a time and a place & there have to be standards for movements to make them measurable. My issues are… 1. A student should NEVER be criticized for taking a risk and doing something a different way than you want. ESPECIALLY in front of other students in a derogatory way. Cooper worked hard this summer to set some goals, and kipping pull ups was one of them. He is SUPER proud of what he worked to achieve. I must admit that I love that he still was able to do 5 strict pull-ups after he was told he couldn’t kip. 2. My biggest issue is that he was told that kipping pull-ups are “for girls!” Are you kidding me?! If you haven’t seen the “like a girl” video that has gone viral, I suggest you watch it and ask yourself, when did doing something “like a girl” become an insult. (Here is the link: https://youtube/watch?v=XjJQBjWYDTs&safe=active) It makes me sad to think what message your comment sent to EVERY other student in your class. Especially the girls. There are so many more things I would LIKE to say, but won’t. However, I would LOVE to challenge you to a pull up competition. I’ll do them strict, or “like a girl” - whatever you choose, but I wouldn’t count me out too easily. You are also welcome to come try a CrossFit class for free, so you can see what it’s all about! We own the CrossFit gym in Heber, CrossFit Vapor (crossfitvapor). Respectfully, McCall Scott 435.531.6606 mccallscott@hotmail
