*Long story. Only read if interested.* I am sitting at a diner drinking coffee and reading. White gentleman to my right looks at me a few times. He appears annoyed but I keep reading. His fascination with me isnt any of my business. White gentleman: Ok Man, you seem really into your book.... What on earth are you reading!? Me: oh. *turns book to cover* its a biography of James Brown. White Gentleman: James? James Brown? Why would there be a biography of him? What did he do? Me: oh. Well... objectively, he completely transformed the landscape of American music and, subjectively, I think he transformed aural functions of Black Religiosity. White gentleman: there are too many biographies of unimportant people. Where does the book start? Me: well R.J. Smith starts with the banning of the African drum. You know, one of the slave codes in 1740. White gentleman: wait. So was James Brown a kid or something when drums were banned? if thats even true. Me: *smiles hard* you have a good day, my man. I gotta run. I got life to enjoy. Yall not gone kill me today, or any other day, especially when the sun is out.
