............... Long term planning and building beacons of development is the foundation of any nation let me share some interesting facts if you dont know any 1. Suez Canal connects East and West. Built in 1800s. If it was not built, ships would be passing around Cape Town from China to UK. Today, Egypt earns more than US$2bn from Suez Canal. 2.Then came Panama Canal connecting Pacific and Atlantic Ocean. Completed in 1914 under the leadership of Theodore Roosevelt for American people. When Columbia hesitated.., US sponsored the breakaway of Panama from Columbia. US went to sign a 100 year lease to own and operate the canal. Today, Panama earns US$3.5bn. As Im writing expansion works are underway. 3. The Portuguese surveyed the site for Caborabassa in 1950 and began building the dam and hydro plant from early 70. Today Caborabassa supplies electricity to all southern Africa countries including South Africa except Malawi. It rakes in more than US2.5bn every year. 4. Ethiopia is completing its hydro plant. It will be the main stay of Ethiopian economy. Built on Nile river it will supply energy to Africa countries, Middle East including Israel. World bank said to Ethiopia ...dont do it.its expensive. Ethiopia said ...e rain come summer we are going to do it. We will find money on our own. The dam is in final phase. The largest project ever on African continent. 5. Congo is to build Inga Dam. South Africa championing the project. Inga will be the second largest hydro plant in the world. My big question is What is Malawi planning to build in the next 20 years? We built nothing in the past 50 years which we can be proud of because we tend to follow shorter routes to development let me tell you this there is no short cut to prosperity and development it requires total dedication and sustainable planning.... My countrymen dont settle for less chitukuko chapompo is not a way to go we need sustainable developments........
