Long winded…but SERIOUSLY…??? My son, a very athletic child, who has never received below a 98 in GYM class, came home with an 88 for the marking period. Never one to say “Not my child” I asked him “What Happened – What did you do”?? He was so upset about it and insisted NOTHING… so I called the teacher to ask “What Happened”?? I received the response: “Your child is correct, he did not do anything wrong! He is an excellent student and excellent athlete but he missed 2 classes this marking period and lost 5 points for each missed class” AFTER my head stopped spinning - seriously - 5 points per class – on an overall average for the whole marking period – for ‘your words’ an excellent student athlete…. WHAT??????? I explained that 1 day (1 day in 4 years mind you) said child was SICK and did not come to school and 2nd occurrence was a required sports physical that I had to take him out of school to get…. Which we conveniently scheduled during his NON-CORE subjects as to not miss the ACADEMIC portion of school to avoid the whole ‘have to make up’ scenario…. BOTH were “excused absences”… It was explained to me that the child could have made up the class by attending the weight room after school activity – “OH, YOU ARE REFERRING TO THE ROOM HE IS IN AT LEAST 2X PER WEEK???” And “Not to mention that he is currently playing on 2 sports teams and NEEDS to use that after school time to actually get his homework done – or to get extra help in one of his academic subjects”! “Policy is Policy!” Time to revisit our policies… Don’t you think?? I have fought this for almost 2 months... ANYONE???
